Kokořín
The village is located about 12 kilometres north-east of Mělník and approximately 35 kilometres north of Prague.
The first written mention of the village dates back to 1320. Kokořín Castle was also built around the same time, likely established by Hynek Berka of Dubá. In the Middle Ages, the region was important because of its trade routes and agriculture. The castle served as a defensive stronghold, but it began to fall into disrepair after the Hussite Wars. In the period following the Thirty Years' War, it was classified as one of the so-called "cursed castles," which were forbidden from being repaired so that they could not be used by the enemy. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the Špaček family restored the castle to its current romantic appearance. (For more information, see Kokořín Castle.)
